What's the buzz? One of the pioneers of Singapore's cafe scene, I Am was founded by a trio of friends with a passion for Amsterdam culture. About three years after it opened, queues are still a common sight on the North Bridge Road entrance into Haji Lane with chairs filling the five-footway for waiting diners.

How's the vibe? Their open-air 40-seater ground-floorspace is located right by the main street, so it can get noisy, but also rather festive. Cop a table on the tarmac on weekends when Haji Lane's closed to cars and you'll get quite a novel dining experience in a city known more for being sanitary than sexy. Prefer privacy? Trot upstairs to their newer air-conditioned space.

What's on the menu? Standard cafe fare such as open-face sandwiches, burgers, pasta (start at $13.90 each) and pizza (around $14.90). Rainbow cake ($8.90 a slice) remains one of their signature items, but now you can order it in a set with a coffee with rainbow latte art.
